This is the labor day weekend. Yahoo! A time for family, a little rest and back yard grilling. For many of us it is the last hurrah of summer and a powerful reminder that winter is coming soon!
In 1894 congress set aside Labor Day as a national holiday.
The United States Labor Department writes, “Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.”
I like that statement.
A long time ago King Solomon gave his version of labor day declaration. “Behold, what I have seen to be good and fitting is to eat and drink and find enjoyment in all the toil with which one toils under the sun the few days of his life that God has given him, for this is his lot. Everyone also to whom God has given wealth and possessions and power to enjoy them, and to accept his lot and rejoice in his toil– this is the gift of God. For he will not much remember the days of his life because God keeps him occupied with joy in his heart.” (Ecc 5:18-20 ESV)
This labor Day rejoice in God’s gift of work.
