The Scarlet Thread of Redemption: Finding Jesus in the Old Testament

C-to-C2

At Village Schools of the Bible we disciple believers in God’s Word.  It is called Cover-to-Cover Bible Survey.  It is the most unique discipleship material I have known.  We help God’s people take a journey through God’s Word from cover to cover—Genesis to Revelation.

Cover-to-Cover Bible Survey

In that journey we discover God’s unfolding plan of redemption in human history.  We learn about the unity of the Bible and how the gospel is the central message about His redeeming love.  Cover-to-Cover Bible Survey helps people know God’s Word and apply God’s Word to their lives.

The center-piece of Cover-to-Cover Bible Survey is what we call The Scarlet Thread of Redemption.  Jesus, our Messiah, is talked about everywhere in the Bible.  In the Old Testament it is about Jesus coming.  In the New Testament, it is Jesus is here.  The cord that ties the entire Bible together is the person of Jesus Christ.

Many Prophecies and Shadows of Jesus’ Coming

The Old Testament gives us dozens upon dozens of prophecies regarding the birth, work, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.  If you add the shadows and types, we have hundreds of references concerning Jesus Christ just in the Old Testament.  This is amazing!  Let me share a few of these prophecies.

In Genesis 3:15 we are told that Messiah will come from Eve’s progeny and be a male child.  His work will be to save Adam’s lost race and defeat the serpent.

In Genesis 9:26 Messiah will come from the line of Shem.  He will be a Semite.

Genesis 15:7 tells us that he will arise from the family of Abraham and the people of Israel.

In Genesis 49:10 Messiah will hold the office of the King.  In Exodus 12 He is the Passover lamb.  John the Baptist understood Christ’s sacrificial work when he said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29)

In Exodus 33:21 He is the rock.  In Numbers 21:4-9, like the bronze serpent who saved Israel from the serpent’s poison in the Old Testament, when Messiah is lifted up (crucified) He will save people from the poison of sin.  (John 3:14-16)

In Joshua 5:1-5 He is the commander of the Lord’s army.  In Ruth Jesus is the Kinsman Redeemer.  In 2 Samuel 7:16, 17 He will be from the lineage of David and will reign on David’s throne.

Psalms 22 says He will be crucified.  Psalm 110 teaches that Jesus is a priest forever.  Isaiah 7:14 predicts His birth will be a virgin birth.  Isaiah 9:6, 7 says His name is “Wonderful,” “Counselor,” “The Mighty God,” and the “Everlasting Father.”

Isaiah 11:1-3 tells us that He will come forth from the “Root of Jesse.”  The prophet Micah says His birthplace is Bethlehem.  (Micah 5:2)

Zechariah 9:9 predicts He will enter Jerusalem on a donkey.  Zechariah 11:12-14 says He will be betrayed for thirty pieces of silver.  Zechariah 13:10 announces that Israel will mourn over the One they pierced.  Zechariah 14:4 promises Messiah’s second coming.

These are only a few of the many Bible passages that provide minute details about who Messiah is and what He will accomplish.  In other words, the birth of Jesus Christ is the most prophesied birth in human history.  We can have certainty that the Christ of the New Testament is the promised Messiah of the Old Testament.

Cover-to-Cover Bible Survey is a thirty-two week discipleship course: 15 weeks Old Testament and 15 weeks New Testament.

You will read the entire Bible in thirty-two weeks.  We will study the Bible from 12,000’.  You will discover the Mt. Everest moments when God breaks into human history to move His plan of redemption forward.

You will read a textbook to guide you on this journey, and you will also write 3 to 5 page reflection papers based on your assigned readings for that week.  For most people, it is the reading and writing where they gain a deeper understanding of God’s Word and learn how to apply God’s Word to their lives.

Our teachers are the best of the best Bible teachers.  They are engaging, knowledgeable and helpful in their communication of God’s Word.  In our online world, our mentors are effective disciple-makers and teachers as well.

Intense!

Yes, Cover-to-Cover Bible Survey is intense.  One of my friends called it boot camp for Christians.  There is some truth in what he says.  But the outcome is amazing.  99% of the people who take Cover-to-Cover Bible Survey say the same thing: “This transformed my life and my walk with Jesus Christ.”

There is university credit available to those interested.

Perspectives on the Power of God’s Word

Student feedback gives an indication of the power of God’s Word to inspire the human spirit and bring about change. This is no empty word (Deut. 32:47). The word of God is living and active! (Heb. 4:12).

The Old and New Testament courses have been life changing – well, that is an understatement. I find myself better equipped to study Scripture and look for all kinds of new and exciting passages. Seeing how God’s story unfolds has enriched my faith. I can’t seem to find the words to convey the importance of taking this course. I wish others could see my enthusiasm. Thank you! — Online Cover-to-Cover student. May 2017.

This was a great experience… The informal peer and mentor accountability kept me motivated and focused. The mixture of seeing the Bible from “30,000 feet” and, at the same time, being able to dig deeply into numerous key areas of God’s truth, was great! – Online Cover-to-Cover Student. May 2017.

I don’t know if I have the right words to express how changing this class has been. This class opened my eyes to things I have heard my whole life, but now it clicks! I love the Old Testament now, and how beautiful it is to see Jesus in it! I would gladly take this class again! – Student from First Baptist, Anoka. May 2017.

This has been an amazing class! Best class ever! Student from Grace Church, Eden Prairie. May 2017.

Words can’t describe it. So many things about what I thought I knew and what I know now…and still need and want to know. I didn’t know I was so hungry for God’s Word spoken clearly and with truth. Thank you! — Wayzata Free Church student. May 2017.
