The End

weddingThe Bible says our world will not last forever.  Revelation 21:1 says the ‘First heaven and the first earth passed away.” 2 Peter 3:10 tells us that “The day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with the roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up.” Jesus used graphic language to describe the end of the world.  “But immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken.” (Matthew 24:29)

So what happens next?

After the universe is burned up, God’s righteousness will triumph.  Sin will be judged and the devil and his works ended.  Suffering and death will be no more.  And then God’s people will celebrate the wedding supper of Jesus Christ.  Revelation 19:7-9 says, “Let us rejoice and be glad and give the glory to Him, for the marriage of the Lamb has come and His bride has made herself ready.  It was given to her to clothe herself in fine linen, bright and clean; for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints.  “Then he said to me, “Write, ‘Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.’”  And he said to me, ‘These are true words of God.’”

The Coe family enjoyed the weddings of our two daughters over the last six years.  They were grand celebrations for friends and family.  People talked and laughed.  There were introductions.  At one wedding the Lord’s Prayer was recited in the Hawaiian language.  We enjoyed greetings and toasts.  Young and old danced late into the night.  Some place in the middle of this amazing moment I was overwhelmed with peace.  Everything was as it should be.

Now think of that day when God’s family is joined together at the wedding feast of the Lamb.  Heaven lasts forever. Celebration of the Lamb of God is eternal.  Just when we think the party is over, our hearts will be gripped by the wonder that the feast has just begun.

This is the hope for everyone who trusts Jesus Christ.  John 3:16 says, “God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.”
